DIVE CONTROL SPECIALIST

DIVEMASTER / ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR

In 1978, SSI introduced the original Dive Control Specialist course with an ambitious goal: to combine assistant instructor and divemaster training. At the time those were the two main courses offered, SSI felt that both were important to the development of a good diving leader and instructor candidate. This thorough training makes the SSI DiveCon a well-prepared, well-educated, versatile, and marketable diving leader.

Devoted divers who are motivated to pass along their love of recreational scuba diving to others will find the Dive Control Specialist course a challenging but satisfying experience that will add a new, rewarding dimension to the sport. Much as the Open Water Diver program opened the door to scuba, the DiveCon course will open the door to leadership, which allows the DiveCon to enjoy diving on an entirely different level and to earn the respect of other divers. Also the advanced education provides the DiveCon with a deeper understanding of all aspects of diving, from DCS to specialty dives, as well as a new perspective on equipment and rescues.

In this course you will learn:

  • Physics
  • Physiology
  • Leader Stress & Rescue
  • Group Management
  • Assisting other Dive Classes
  • Decompression Theory
  • Equipment
  • The Aquatic Environment
  • Leading Special Dives and Trips
  • Refresher Courses and Snorkeling Programs

This course is conducted in two different ways. The first is the easiest, in that other DiveCon candidates act as the "students" for the training, therefore the course goes by very quickly (2-3 weeks). The second is the most common way to hold the course outside of southern Florida - internship. The candidate must intern with the instructor in actual classes with actual students, as well as learning the academics, the pool skills, the watermanship exercises, the exams, etc. The first one only lasts about 3 weeks at most, and is generally considered a "crash" course is divemastering. The second method allows the candidate to take their time, absorbing the many skills, text, and situations required to become an effective dive leader (this method, because of class schedules can make the course last as long as 3 months).
